, ,
little blue shoulders, but big enough to bring
a cap and a pair of goggles, a scarf against the cold —
heart says go, before I'm told.

, and I fly ahead,
, like my captain said.

On wings and prayers, I climb —
wings for the doing, prayers for the why.
The world does what it wants, but I hold the line.
Small bird, big sky — I was born to try.
On wings and prayers, I'll fly.

Clouds like a country I have never crossed,
.
You don't fight the weather, you read it and you turn —
calm is a thing you learn.

So I brief it, and I scan it, and I fly ahead,
faith in my feathers and .

On wings and prayers, I climb —
wings for the doing, prayers for the why.
The world does what it wants, but I hold the line.
Small bird, big sky — I was born to try.
On wings and prayers, I'll fly.

When the sky goes dark and the thunder calls my name,
I don't close my eyes — .
A little bit of courage, a little bit of grace,

Words in this song

Morning on the tarmac

Tarmac is the hard, flat black surface at an airfield where aircraft park and taxi. It is named after the tar used to make it.

dew along the wing

Dew is the tiny drops of water that gather on cold surfaces overnight and dry off once the sun comes up.

So I brief it, and I scan it

To brief is to talk through the plan before you start. To scan is to look over the instruments in a set order, checking each one.

quiet in the cockpit

The cockpit is the small compartment at the front where the pilot sits. Keeping it quiet is a real rule: no chatter during the busy parts.

every honest pilot knows a little getting lost

Admitting you have been lost is normal among pilots. Pretending you never have is the dangerous part.

a checklist in my head

A checklist is a written list of things to check in order, so that being tired or frightened cannot make you forget one.

I just steady the frame

The frame is the body of the aircraft. Steadying it means holding it level while everything around it is trying to shake it.

a halo of gold in a hard, high place

A halo is the ring of light painted above someone in very old pictures. Here it is the sun catching the aircraft above the storm.
