Morning on the tarmac, dew still on the wing, and a small pilot doing the unglamorous parts of flying with complete seriousness: briefing, scanning, keeping the checklist, staying calm. “Wings for the doing, prayers for the why” is the record explaining itself: the craft and the hope, held at the same time. It ends on its own terms, the way the whole album does: “I’ll land when I’m ready, and I’ll land just fine.”

Little Blue Pilot Notes

Morning on the tarmac

The tarmac is the wide flat apron where aircraft park and taxi, named after the tar it used to be made of. Essentially an aeroplane car park.

The song begins there at first light, before anybody else is up.

And nobody sent him. That is what the empty apron is for: he is standing on it because he chose to be. The most serious song on the album starts in its plainest possible place.

dew along the wing

Tiny drops of water that appear overnight, when the air cools and leaves its dampness on everything it touches.

Dew is what the night leaves on something that stayed still. The aeroplane stood in the dark all night, and the morning wrote on it.

Half the album's title is sitting in this line, before anything has happened at all.

So I brief it, and I scan it

Two real habits, and they are different jobs. A brief is talking the plan through before you fly, even if the only person you are telling is yourself. A scan is the loop your eyes keep running over the instruments, around and around, the whole flight long.

One happens once. The other never stops.

Neither is glamorous. Most of flying is careful small jobs that nobody claps for.

quiet in the cockpit

The cockpit is the small room where the pilot flies the aeroplane. Part office, part control room, part everybody-please-concentrate.

During the busy parts of a flight, crews stop chatting on purpose. When it matters most, you hush and fly.

And listen to how he knows that: like my captain said. He is still quoting somebody he trusts.

wings for the doing, prayers for the why

The album explaining its own name.

Wings are the doing part: the practice, the checklists, the actual work of getting into the air. Prayers are the why part: the hoping, the loving, the reason you climb at all.

You need both. One without the other does not fly.

a little getting lost

Even pilots get turned around sometimes, and the honest ones say so out loud.

Which is more than good manners. For a pilot who is genuinely lost, admitting it is the actual procedure: you say so on the radio, and people on the ground start helping you straight away.

The skill is not never getting lost. The skill is knowing what to do about it, and skills can be learned.

faith in my feathers

Trusting the wings you were given before you are completely certain they will hold.

Now compare the two pre-choruses, because the whole song is hiding in one changed line. The first time he is quiet in the cockpit, like my captain said. The second time he has faith in my feathers.

He began by borrowing somebody else's steadiness. By the second verse it is his own.

a checklist in my head

A written list of things to check, worked through at a particular moment, in order, every time.

The point of it is not remembering. The point is not having to remember: the list does that job, so the pilot can spend all their attention on flying.

Real crews carry paper ones for exactly this reason. Even the best brains get busy.

I just steady the frame

The frame is the body of the aeroplane, the part holding everything else together.

When the storm shakes it, the pilot's job is not to stop the shaking. It is to hold steady inside it.

And read the line once more, because the frame is his as well. Steadying the aircraft and steadying himself are the same movement. Notice that his eyes are open.

a halo of gold in a hard, high place

Sunlight, catching a small aeroplane high up where the flying is hardest.

A halo is the ring of light that old paintings put above somebody precious. Track three used the same image at bedtime, and it meant the same thing there: this one is loved.

What is different is where you have to be to see it. A ring of light like this cannot be seen from the ground. You climb, and then it is there.
