Track 6 of 12 on Wings & Prayers and Second Flight

Higher Than the Clouds

Breaking through the grey into open sky, with nothing left to hold you down.

The reward — after courage, what's on the other side

What happens after courage. One more flap and the little pilot breaks through the grey into the blue: clouds quiet underneath, sun everywhere, rivers turned to ribbons and mountains small below. The sky, it turns out, was waiting the whole time, patient as the dawn. And watch the pronouns as the song climbs: the first chorus holds the view alone, “mine to hold”; by the last one there are a hundred wings alongside and it has become “ours.”

(breath)
...oh...

The clouds went quiet under me,
the rain became a memory.
One more flap... and through I flew,
.

And the sun just found me,
gold light all around me.
...

I'm higher than the clouds now! (whoa-oh!)
Arms out, catching gold.
Higher than the clouds now,
this is mine to hold.
,
mountains small below.
I'm higher than the clouds now—
and now I finally know...
The sky was always waiting,
.
It was calling softly,
all along.

A hundred wings are next to mine,
we're drawing circles through the sky.
—
just me, my friends, and endless blue.

And the light keeps finding,
.
Nothing left to hold me down...

Chorus

I didn't know that free
could feel this quiet...
Didn't know that brave
could turn to this...
This wide...
This warm...
This wonderful...
(building)
Whoa...
I could fly forever...
and still find something new.

We're higher than the clouds now! (everybody: whoa-oh!)
Arms out, catching gold.
Higher than the clouds now,
this is ours to hold.
Every wing beside me,
every hand I've found.
We're higher than the clouds now,
sing it loud and proud!
The sky was always waiting,
shining like the sun.
Now we know the journey...
has only just begun.

Higher...
Than the clouds...
(children's choir)
Whoa-oh...
Come on...
Let's keep flying.
