The Little Blue Pilot

A bedtime telling of the whole journey, from first flight to wheels down and sleep.

LessonGratitude, rest, "we'll watch for you tomorrow"

Some words are underlined. Tap one to find out what it means.

Once, above the quiet hills, where the evening goes gold,
there was a little blue bird who wanted to fly—
not fast, not far, just true.

The sky was very big, and the sky was
snow one day, sunshine the next,
a whole sky full of maybe.
But the little bird had two things:
.

And then the storm came (it always comes),
but the little bird didn't fight it—he read it.
Tipped a wing, ,
, and the little bird steered.

And when he'd flown enough—
not when he ran out, but when he chose—
he turned for home, ,
soft as a dropped feather.
He closed his eyes,
and .

Good night, little pilot.
The window's still warm…
we'll watch for you tomorrow.

Words in this song

a bit of a tease

Teasing is playing little tricks on someone. A sky that teases keeps changing its mind to catch you out.

a wing… and a prayer

An old flying phrase for getting home with barely enough left — one working wing and a great deal of hope. It is where the album gets its name.

held his line

Holding your line means keeping the direction you chose instead of letting the wind push you off it.

the world spun the wheel

The wheel is what a pilot turns to steer. Here the world turns it — things happen to you — and the bird steers anyway.

wheels down

The moment an aircraft's wheels come out and touch the ground. It means the flight is over and you have landed.

a little ring of gold settled over his head

A halo — the ring of light painted above someone in very old pictures. Here it is just sleep arriving, and being safe.
