The record opens in the moment before the very first take-off: goggles on, deep breath, a hill that says “Off you pop!” The little blue bird isn’t the fastest or the tallest (the song counts the ways), and none of it matters. Goggles

Swim goggles for the sky. They seal all the way around so the wind cannot sneak in, and a pilot wears them so their eyes can stay open while the world rushes past.

Listen to who is speaking, though. Goggles on. Deep breath. There you go. Somebody else is doing up the strap.

The album opens with a nervous beginner being got ready by a warm voice. Nobody starts alone.

Off you pop!

A cheerful British way of saying: go on then, away you go.

It is what you say to someone who is ready, even if they do not quite believe it yet. The hill believes it.

a heart that went tick-tock

A heart beating so hard you can almost hear it, like a clock in a very quiet room.

That is not a broken heart. That is an excited and slightly frightened heart, the kind you get standing between what feels safe and something you have always dreamed of doing. Look at the words just before it: a great big dream. You only get a heart this loud when you want something big.

The tick-tock is the choice. Stay where you are, or take the leap.

Sometimes courage does not mean the fear goes away. It means you go anyway.

lean into the air

Here is a flying secret: air is not empty. It has weight. A wing pushes air downward, the air pushes the wing up, and that push is what holds a bird or an aeroplane up in the sky.

So leaning in is not showing off. It is how you let the air reach you.

And leaning is about deciding, not about doing it tidily. You can commit completely and still wobble the whole way down. Ask any bird.

The song's own recipe for a first try at anything. A wobble, because you are new. A flap, because you are trying regardless. And a prayer, which is a hope said out loud.

Notice what is missing, though. A grown flyer would say a wing. This little bird has only got a flap.

That is the album's oldest saying arriving in its youngest form. You meet the full version in track three.

every captain of the blue

The blue is what flyers call the sky, and a captain is the pilot in charge. So a captain of the blue is anybody the sky belongs to.

The song is quietly naming a crew here, one track before you meet them. Cruising Captain, Wind Reader and Aviation Ace are all waiting in track two.

And the entry requirement, according to this bridge, is one shaky flap.

Baby birds do not wait until they are good at it. They leave the nest before they can properly fly and work it out on the way down. The first flight is supposed to be a flop.

So when the bridge says every captain of the blue started with one shaky flap, it is not being kind to you. It is telling you how flying actually begins.
