The coming-home song. You turn for home not because you’re tired out, not because you’re done, but because you chose it. What waits below is specific and warm: the porch light on, a saved window, supper cooking, the kettle whistling low. And the bridge straightens out one small word for good: “enough” is not a sad word. Enough is warm and wide. Enough is “I did beautiful”.

Little Blue Pilot Notes

Slow it down, glide it in

How a landing actually works: ease the speed off, then let the air lower you gently until the wheels find the ground.

The soft landing is the difficult one. Right at the end the pilot eases the nose up so the aircraft stops descending and settles instead of arriving. Gentleness is the part you practise.

You do not crash into an ending. You float down to one.

Wheels down

The wheels are called the landing gear, and on many aeroplanes they spend the flight folded up inside.

So wheels down is something a pilot confirms, not only something they feel. The gear comes out, locks into place, and three green lights appear in the cockpit to say so. Three small lights meaning: you may come home now.

Track three, the bedtime telling, already turned him for home, wheels down. Here is the song it was promising.

the porch light's on for you

The little lamp beside the front door. Leaving it on means somebody knew you were coming and wanted you to be able to find your way.

It is a signal sent outward, into the dark, for somebody who is still out in it.

The smallest light in the song, and somehow the warmest.

somebody saved a window too

You can save a seat for somebody. Saving a window is stranger, and lovelier.

It means someone kept a window for you: did not cover it, did not go up to bed, left it lit and kept looking out of it. Somebody has been standing there watching the sky for one small returning shape.

And it pays off a promise. Near the very end of track three, the window is still warm. This is that window.

home was always true

True is a real direction. There is magnetic north, which wanders about and which your compass needle points at, and there is true north, which is the actual top of the world and never moves. Flying true means holding the real line.

So this is a navigation claim as much as a kind sentiment. The sky changed its mind all album long. Home held its bearing.

Steady. Reliable. Yours.

Specialist's got supper

Supper is the cosy evening meal at the end of a day.

And specialist is a real aviation job, or rather a hundred of them: the dispatchers, the engineers, the ground crew. The people who never leave the ground, and without whom nothing else leaves the ground either.

The name is the whole note. This is the crew member whose job is making everybody else's flying possible, and who does it with a hot supper waiting.

the kettle's whistling low

A kettle whistles because steam is squeezing out through a tiny hole, which is worth listening for the next time one goes off near you.

Whistling low means it has been on a while. Somebody put it on before you landed, because they heard you coming.

The porch light was for finding your way home. This is what was already waiting once you got inside.

Marathon Pilot

A marathon is a race so long it takes most of a day to finish, and Marathon Pilot is the one who flies that kind of distance.

Which is what makes her opinion worth so much. Of everybody in this crew, she has the strongest possible case for the flying being the point.

And here is what she says while she is kicking her boots off: best part's the coming home. That is not somebody being brave about it. That is evidence.

"Enough" is not a sad word

Some people say enough as though it meant giving up. This song disagrees, and it made its case back in verse one: not because you're tired out, but because you chose it.

That is the entire difference. Stopping because you are empty is one thing. Stopping because you are full is another.

Enough means: I did what I came to do, and now I get to rest. Stopping on purpose is not quitting.
