Track 07

Wheels Down

Turning for home by choice rather than exhaustion, and finding the porch light on.

ChapterComing home

LessonYou get to choose "enough" — and home is waiting

Some words are underlined. Tap one to find out what it means.

The sun went soft and orange,
the hills turned into gold…

Not because you're tired out,
not because you're done,
but because you chose it, little one—
you turn toward home and the setting sun.

,
soft as a falling feather—

Wheels down, wheels down,
,
wheels down, wheels down,
somebody saved a window too.
You flew so far, little pilot,
now the day is through—
wheels down, wheels down,
home was always true.

Specialist's got supper,
,
kicks her flying boots off—
"Best part's the coming home, you know."

Chorus

,
"enough" is warm and wide—
"enough" is "I did beautiful,"
and a soft place, just inside.

Wheels… down. You're home.

Words in this song

the porch light's on for you

A porch light is the lamp beside a front door. Leaving it on means somebody is expecting you and wants you to find your way in.

Slow it down, glide it in

How a landing is actually flown: take the speed off, then let the aircraft settle onto the ground rather than driving it down.

the kettle's whistling low

A kettle whistles when the water has boiled. It is the sound of somebody already making you a hot drink.

Marathon Pilot

A marathon is a very long race — more than forty kilometres. A marathon pilot is one who goes the whole distance.

"Enough" is not a sad word

Enough means you have as much as you need. The song is arguing that stopping because you have had enough is not the same as giving up.
