The most direct song on the record: sung straight to one child in the middle of something hard, who is not at all sure. The instructions are deliberately tiny: take one little breath, one step, climb that wall. It never pretends the hard thing away: the dark rolls in like a heavy coat and the song lets it, then points at steady hands, at tiny steps making a bigger trail, at the wobble that is not the same as failing. Track twelve sings it all again as “we.”

Little Blue Pilot Notes

Take one little breath

Not a big breath. A little one.

A slow breath genuinely settles you down. It tells the part of your body that panics that the emergency is over, and that part believes it, which is a very useful thing to know about yourself.

When something feels too big, you do not have to do the whole thing. You only have to do the next tiny piece. Breathing counts as the first tiny piece.

Like a heavy coat

A feeling can weigh something, even though you could never put it on a scale.

Notice that the song refuses to say what the dark is. It might be worry. It might be sadness, or tiredness, or missing somebody. Leaving it unnamed is deliberate, so that whatever yours is, this line is about you.

The song never pretends the coat is light. It quietly reminds you that coats come off.

Makes a bigger trail

A trail is the path your footsteps leave behind you.

One step does not look like very much. But steps add up into a trail, and a trail is proof of how far you have come.

It is also a path. Somebody smaller can follow it later, which is exactly what happens in track twelve, where the child who was sung to becomes one of the people singing.

Even when you wobble

Wobbling is rocking from side to side without going over.

Read that last part again: without going over. A wobble is not failing. A wobble is balancing, which is what trying looks like from the outside.

It is also what flying looks like. An aircraft holding a dead straight line is not still, it is correcting constantly, in tiny amounts, the whole way. Holding a line is made of wobbles.

Let it pass on by

Thunder is the sound that lightning makes. It arrives after the flash, because sound is slower than light, and the noise itself cannot touch anybody.

But hearing it means the storm is close, and that is the time to go indoors and wait. A storm always passes.

You do not have to shout back at it. Step aside, let it grumble past, and keep climbing.

Reach and touch the sky

The sky is not only up high. It starts a few centimetres above the grass, and you have been standing at the bottom of it your entire life.

So reaching up and touching it is already done. It was done before the song started.
